This talk presents O’Donnell’s thinking about foyers and in-between spaces, across many projects over thirty years, and the approach taken to the competition-winning design by O’Donnell + Tuomey of a new dance theatre and academy for London’s Sadler’s Wells.

Sheila O’Donnell established O’Donnell + Tuomey with John Tuomey (see Spaces For Exhibition & Display) in 1988, a practice committed to the craft and culture of architecture, now with studios in Dublin, Cork and London. They intend their buildings to "feel 'strangely familiar', original in their concept, contemporary in their expression, but belonging to the deeper background of their place".

O’Donnell + Tuomey have exhibited at the Venice Biennale with installations, have been winners of the AAI Downes Medal, shortlisted for the RIBA International Prize, finalists for the RIBA Stirling Prize and the EU Mies Prize. They were twice recipients of the RIAI Gold Medal, and were awarded the American Academy Brunner Prize and RIBA Royal Gold Medal, both awarded for recognition of a lifetime of work.
