About this talk

Running time: 22 minutes

This talk presents Tuomey's thinking about spaces for exhibition and display, and how it influenced the approach taken by the competition-winning design by O'Donnell + Tuomey for a new museum for the Victoria and Albert Museum, known as V&A East.

John Tuomey established O'Donnell + Tuomey with Sheila O'Donnell (see Foyers & In-Between Spaces) in 1988. Their practice is committed to the craft and culture of architecture with studios in Dublin, Cork and London. They intend their buildings to "feel 'strangely familiar', original in their concept, contemporary in their expression, but belonging to the deeper background of their place".

O'Donnell + Tuomey have exhibited at the Venice Biennale with installations which advance their research into aspects of architecture - materials, form, construction and space - as well as its overlap with other art forms. They have been winners of the AAI Downes Medal, shortlisted for the RIBA International Prize, finalists for the RIBA Stirling Prize and the EU Mies Prize. They are twice recipients the RIAI Gold Medal, the highest award in Irish Architecture, and were awarded the American Academy Brunner Prize and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for their contribution to international architecture.
